Sophos XGS vs SonicWall TZ — Which SMB Firewall Wins in India (2026)?

Head-to-head comparison of Sophos XGS 87/116/136 and SonicWall TZ270/TZ370/TZ470 for Indian SMBs — features, threat protection, price bands and which firewall actually fits a 10-100 user business.

Sophos and SonicWall both own a huge share of the Indian SMB firewall market — but for very different reasons. This is an honest, partner-neutral comparison of the Sophos XGS and SonicWall TZ series for businesses with 10-100 users.

We're a Pune-based authorized partner for both — Sophos Silver Partner and SonicWall SecureFirst Partner — so we sell whichever genuinely fits the customer.

The Models That Actually Compete

Round 1 — Threat Protection Architecture

Sophos XGS runs Xstream — a dedicated Xstream Flow Processor offloads TLS 1.3 inspection and IPS, so enabling deep packet inspection doesn't tank performance. Sophos also integrates uniquely with Intercept X endpoints via Synchronized Security — if an endpoint goes red, the firewall automatically isolates it.

SonicWall TZ runs SonicOS 7 with RTDMI (Real-Time Deep Memory Inspection) — a patented technique that catches memory-resident and zero-day malware that file-based AV misses. Capture ATP cloud sandboxing is fast and reliable.

Winner: Sophos for synchronized endpoint integration. SonicWall for raw zero-day detection on weird payloads. Both excellent.

Round 2 — Management Experience

Sophos Central is cloud-first, multi-tenant, and unifies firewalls, endpoints, email, mobile and server protection in one console. If you already run Sophos Intercept X, adding XGS is a no-brainer.

SonicWall NSM / Capture Security Center is solid but more firewall-centric. Cleaner for pure network teams; less useful if you want a single security console.

Winner: Sophos if you want one pane of glass for everything. SonicWall if your network team owns the firewall and security is a separate team.

Round 3 — Pricing in India

Indicative 2026 INR pricing for hardware + 1-year standard bundle (GST extra):

Winner: SonicWall is consistently 10-15% cheaper at the same tier. Sophos closes the gap on 3-year bundles and on customers who already have Intercept X.

Round 4 — Support & RMA in India

Both have strong distributor presence in Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai. Sophos has historically had faster RMA in tier-2/3 cities; SonicWall improved a lot in 2024-25 with a new Indian RMA partner. A factor 5 years ago — basically a tie today.

Round 5 — Renewals (The Hidden Killer)

Both vendors renew aggressively. Year 3 renewal is often 80-100% of year-1 hardware cost. The cheaper firewall today can be the more expensive one across 5 years. Always ask your reseller for a 3-year and 5-year TCO comparison — not just hardware price.

So Who Wins?

How We Decide for Our Pune Customers

For a typical 25-user Pune office with no existing security stack, we'll usually quote both — SonicWall TZ370 and Sophos XGS 116 — and let the buyer pick on price vs ecosystem.

For an existing Sophos Intercept X customer, the answer is always XGS — synchronized security is genuinely worth the premium.
